Monica and Mel's story takes the idea of running interference and turns it on its head. Monica and her friend Venus first spotted Mel and his friend Ron when they walked through the door of a local wine bar.
Ron later took note of Venus and asked Mel to run interference with Monica so he could get to know her. Though totally aware of what was going on, Monica decided to be polite and continued the conversation with Mel.
They talked through the evening, and Mel left the conversation by saying that he felt as though they had more to say, so he asked Monica for her number. When Venus found out that Monica had indeed given Mel her number, she commented that they would probably end up getting married.

Venus prediction ultimately came true. But that truth was confirmed through Mel's response to the loss of Monica's grandfather shortly after they began dating. Monica felt Mel's compassion, and she was certain that there was more to this guy then a good wing man.
